Synopsis via GoodReads:
Smoke jumping is Garrick Nelsonโs life. Nothing, not severe injuries nor the brutal physical therapy that follows, is going to stop him from getting back with his crew. But when a lost dog shows up on his front porch, he canโt turn her away, and he canโt take care of her on his own. Thankfully, help comes in the form of his new sexy, dog-loving neighbor. As they work together, trying to re-home their little princess, Garrick canโt resist his growing attraction for the other man, even though he knows this guy isnโt the staying type.
Rain Fisher doesnโt take anything too seriously. He dances through life, one adventure at a time, never settling in one place for too long. When his hot, conveniently buff, neighbor shows up on his doorstep, dog in tow, Rainโs determined to not just save the adorable puppy, but her reluctant owner as well. He never expects their flirtation might tempt him into stay put once and for all…
Review:
High Heat by Annabeth Albert is a great book for those who enjoy hurt/comfort themes. Garrick is a smoke jumper who was injured in book one and has struggled to recover, determined to get back to doing what he loves. His body though, has other plans both physically and sexually. Rain is a happy hippy that accepts him for who he is and tries to get Garrick to do the same. He is incredibly supportive of Garrick, despite Garrick himself. They make a great couple and it was hard not to wish them the best in your head while you were reading.
That said, this was one of those, itโs not you book, itโs me. Iโm not quite sure why, because it is well written and researched. For some reason I just didnโt connect with either character and I struggled to finish it. Again, Iโm very much in the minority because Iโve not seen a bad thing written about this one. I loved this authorโs military series, but this one just didnโt do it for me. Iโve given up trying to figure out why and just went with it. Sometimes thatโs just the way it goes. Iโm sure if you give it a try, youโll enjoy it. My brain likes to do this to me once and a while. ๐
